Sexualities and Dementia

This educational resource was developed to increase understanding of the concepts of intimacy, sexuality, sexual behaviours and expression of various types of sexuality (including the benefits of and barriers to expression of sexuality).

This education resource is built around three learning modules:

  • Intimacy, sexuality and sexual behaviour
  • Dementia and the expression of sexuality
  • Ethical considerations: policy guidelines development for sexualities and dementia in care settings

Dr Cindy Jones is a Research Fellow with Menzies Health Institute Queensland, Centre for Health Practice Innovation (HPI) at Griffith University. The focus of her work includes an exploration of relationships in long-term care; expression of sexualities by older people; and quality of and evidence-based dementia care. This work is being developed around the key areas of knowledge transfer and workforce training and development. In 2013, Dr Jones developed Sexualities & Dementia: An Online Education Resource for Health Professionals, funded by the Department of Health and Ageing via the Queensland Dementia Training and Study Centre (QLD DTSC). She is a Griffith representative for the QLD DTSC.

Guardianship & Administration & how it relates within the Aged Care Facility

Anna Gauci, Manager Information Support NSW Office of the Public Guardian, NSW Department of Justice will provide advices on the following topics.

  1. Substitute decision maker: Their obligations and what to do if they are not acting in a client’s best interests;
  2. Capacity & Consent: How to assist someone who’s decision making capacity is changing or being questioned;
  3. The role and limitations: Enduring Power of Attorney (EPOA) and Advanced Health Directive (AHD) documents and how they relate to everyday decisions; and
  4. Legal and ethical considerations: Guardianship and administration system and how it relates within the aged care facility: DON or representative role.

For our new graduates/less experienced or newly appointed managers we are often asked how the guardianship board and administrative system operates – it processes – this could be almost a session on its own.
